Since 2005, Suburban Tap, our winner in the Best Neighborhood Pub category, has been serving a wide range of tastes and interests.
Business and tradespeople like the lunch menu, which begins at 11 a.m. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., longtime regulars and retirees come by the bar to socialize with buddies. The after work bunch drops by around 5 p.m., and at 6 p.m. families and kids predominate.
Eight p.m. brings in the team trivia aficionados and Texas Hold ‘Em players in their 30s and 40s. And a DJ at 10 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays a live band on Saturdays draw the 20s and 30s crowd.
“It’s really a diverse group of people,” manager Paul Tyrell said of the Tap’s patrons.
On a recent afternoon, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Seger and Santana follow each other on the sound system as football and other sports fill the screens around the bar and dining areas.
The Tap has a full liquor bar and there’s a smattering of house wines available, but it’s the extensive brew list that’s the star at this popular east Cobb watering hole. More than 24 beers, ales and lagers are on tap, with dozens and dozens more offered by the bottle or can. IPAs, brown ale, porters, pilsners, cider, Belgian, Trappist and pale ales. . .the list goes on and on.
Some of the most interesting breweries represented are Oregon’s Rogue Ales, The Duck-Rabbit from North Caro-lina and Baltimore’s Clipper City Brewing with its Heavy Seas line of high-gravity beers.
An excellent way to experience the more than 130 different brews is joining the Tap’a Beer Club. You can rate and keep track of each individual beverage you drink and earn points toward prizes.
While a far-reaching beverage selection is a hallmark of a great neighborhood tavern, the quality of the food com-ing out of the Tap’s kitchen more than holds its own.
“A lot of people think bar food is finger food, but it’s not,” Tyrell said. “It’s really simple, comfort food with high flavor profiles.”
Fried pickles? Three layer bean dip? Chips with wing sauce and blue cheese? Check.
Want a mountain of fajita steak nachos with homemade pico de gallo? Wings with 13 sauces from mild to haben-ero, including spicy garlic and lemon teriyaki? The Tap’s got it covered.
There are burgers galore, including The Widowmaker, a winner in our summer Best Burger survey. But do try the Nurenberger, a thin spiral of grilled bratwurst coiled around sauerkraut and mustard on a soft pretzel bun. Or maybe the pulled pork sandwich with bacon, Alabama-style white barbecue sauce and fried onions.
Sandwiches and wraps include Philly and Italian cheesesteaks and fried Buffalo chicken. Fajitas, quesadillas, fish tacos and other Southwestern faves as well as several salads and skillet meals round out the bill of fare.
